How these dates are worked out
Rules, not a list
Every date on this page is computed. Diwali is the Amavasya of Kartika; Holi is the Purnima of Phalguna; Ganesh Chaturthi is the Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada. Give those rules a real ephemeris and the dates fall out — for any year, without anyone typing them in.
That matters because a typed-in list is right for one year and quietly wrong afterwards, with nothing to notice. It also cannot be right in two places at once: a festival falls on the civil day whose local sunrise its tithi spans, so the same rule gives different Gregorian dates in Delhi and in Auckland.
A few festivals are not dated from sunrise, because they are not observed at sunrise. Diwali is dated from the Pradosh window after sunset, when Lakshmi Puja is performed, and Maha Shivaratri from Nishita at midnight. We apply that only where we have checked the result against a published date.
Where traditions genuinely differ we say so instead of choosing for you — Diwali is Ashwin Amavasya in Gujarat and Kartika Amavasya in Delhi, the same night under two month names.
